check engine light out

Does the si board have to be working for the check engine light to come on? The problem I'm having is my car will not go past 2000 rpm and loses all power but does not stall. I have replaced the fuel filters. The fuel pump makes noise but is defenently working.I apologize for any mistakes I make on here in advance,I have never used aforum before.

ok, the si board will not cause the car to not go past 2000RPM. Can you be a little more specific as to what the car is doing?

sorry about that. I wanted to know if the si board was neccasary for the check engine light to come on so I could pull up the codes. The car runs good up to 2000 then stalls.NO matter how hard I hit the accelerater it will not go past 2000.The engine does not completly shut off, it will continue running it will just cycle between 2000 and around 500.I fogot to mentin it is a 85 318i.

Have you checked the obvious things, like plugs, rotor, etc...

Exactly. I would check to see if there are any vacuum leaks in the system. This may be causing your problem.

I appreciate your time but you still did't answer my original question if the check engine light will work with abad si board. Will bad vacume hoses give me false codes if I did that?

Hmm, I dont believe the engine codes would come on with a dead si board, however i would not rely on that as your primary diagnostic tool Especially in the case of the early 318's. The Check code system is VERY basic and cant really give you a definitive answer as to the problem. I would go over that engine with a fine tooth comb and try to determine while it wont go over 2000RPM first. What does it feel like when you try to go over 2000RPM? is there a hesitation? Does the car feel like it's straining?

iIt completly loses power. It will do this whther I'm just sitting in the dreway or if I'm driving. If Im driving the car buck's very hard. I can't drive it because it jerks hard enough to easily break something in the drive train, unless if Idrive without going over 2000.lol

hmm sounds like it's either ignition or fuel related. Have you checked your fuel pressure, filter, pump?

this just came up the other day. One minute it was driving just fine.Istopped for awhile and it started doing that.It does not vary in any way. Between idle and 2000 it runs good.

I'd check the filter and pump. This has to be either ignition or fuel.

Found problem, bad plug wires. They were only about 3 weeks old. I won,t be buying these again from the flaps.Along the way I found something very disturbing, the plugs were covered withoil. It was on the outside part of the plug not the part that would go into the head, that part was rather clean. The car doesn,t smoke even a little bit.Looks like it is time to go car shopping.

There you go...

Glad to be of help..

I wouldnt worry about oil on the outside. Most likely you have a leaking valve cover gasket, which is dripping oil down onto the plugs..

I brout that up hoping you were going to say something like that. It,s due for the valves to be adjusted anyway. Your help is greatly appretiated, and I,m sure I,m not the only one who thinks that.
