87 325i new owner questions

I just bought an 87 325i with 78k mi, and of course there are problems! I had the car stalling out and bucking while riding, so I found out that the intake bellows had a big ol crack in it so I replaced it... still was stalling out after stop and go traffic, so I got the air fuel mixture tweaked a bit (we're not sure if we did it enough). I still have the engine light on (it actually will blink sometimes and then not even come on for awhile, but for the majority of the time it's on taunting me). I never had a BMW before, so I don't know if the engine sounds ok or not... sounds lopey though. I suspect the o2 sensor at least...

How exactly did you adjust the fuel air mixture? On the 87 cars, there is no way to do this.

Some things to check

1. O2 Sensor
2. ICV Idle Control Valve
3. TPS Throttle position Switch
4. Vacuum Leaks, replace all hoses, and the valve cover gasket. I'll bet this is a big part of the problem.

ok I used the wrong terminology! Well, I should've taken it to the mechanic today; it bucked its final buck and I had to have it towed... I have to bow down and get it looked at... Thank you for the tips I will let you know what happens.

Took it to my mechanic and we figured it needs a new o2 sensor, ignition wires, cap and rotor, sparkplugs, and oh yeah rear wheel bearings need replacing. I don't know about the rear wheel bearings, whether or not that's normal, but the others sound like normal crap to replace. Opinions?

Oh yeah before, I meant the idle control valve. I forgot to add that the gas tank got drained and there was a lot of sludge (rust particles). I am judging that might have caused the bucking...

Yes, that would be the first thing i would check. If there is rust in the tank, I'm willing to bet it's merely a fuel filter causing the bucking. Be sure to drain the tank of all rust as well.

How do I drain the tank of all rust? Is there going to be problems in the future if rust is found in the tank?

Do the other parts sound about right in terms of age of the car?

Am replacing the fuel filter too... Is it normal for rear wheel bearings to go at about that time?

If it were me, i would remove the tank completely, drain it, then spray the inside with a rust inhibitor. You can get this stuff at any FLAPS.

Also, b/c I have never owned nor driven a Bimmer b4, when I shift into Drive or Reverse especially, it seems to lurch. Is this typical? I honestly don't know how to describe it properly. No wrenching sounds or anything like that...

ok got all this stuff done, seems to run fine, but then catch me in some stop and go traffic, and it does the same thing! Engine surging then losing power, possibly stalling out when I come to a stop at a red light... This is getting very frustrating. Fuel filter changed, new o2 sensor, new ignition wires, new cap and rotor, new plugs... Suggestions? I'm getting to the end of my rope here!

Your problem seems similar to my daughter's ('91-325i). A new fuel pump fixed the problem.

You know, that sounds like it might be the problem. Here is another interesting observation, and it sounds crazy but... This bucking and stalling out usually only occurs on warm weather days. What is going on with that?
