Sorry. It is a 85 318. Also noticed that where the roter sparks on the other cyl. it is barley hitting it. If this was off any more all of them wouldn't fire.

Ok, have you checked the following

1. Spark plugs, pull them out and see if the no. 2 is fouled
2. What is the condition of the rotor? Is the faced burned or pitted?
3. How is the condition of the inside of the cap? Cracks, pitting? Anything?
4. Have you checked the spark plug wires? One (or more) may have built up internal resistance and cuased it to no longer transmit spark.

There may also be the possibilty that you have a mechanical fault with the distributor itself. Ont hese cars, they use a hall-type four prong plate that acts like a firing guide. (basically it replaces mechanical points with a optical or magnetic sensor. I have seen a few of these need a slight adjustment to fix a dead cylinder, however i would check the things up top first.

Im betting you have a bad plug wire. What you can do is replace the plug wire going to the number two cylinder with a known good one and see if the plug fires.

Ok, did you try replacing the wire yet? Understnad that the cap has no moving parts, it's just a few contact strips inside. Look inside and check the terminals on the inside of the cap Do they look corroded? pitted? Burned? Keep in mind that when you get a new cap, those contacts should look like freshly cleaned brass.

Ok, pull the cap off, pull the rotor off, and the small plastic disc underneath.

Once off you should see a 4 pronged cross. This is the armature for the ignition. Inspect it, does it appear bent or damaged?

No they look straight. Were the spark is hitting the roter is on the very back edge if this was off any more none would spark.

Boshe. The standered ones not the platinum. Iwas having the same problem before I replaced all this. I too thought it was a bad plug wire but this is the second new set on there.

Hmm... this is puzzling, because typically, if there was a problem, ALL the plugs would cease firing, not just one..

I assume you have checked the wire for spark (like with a screwdriver against the block) and there is no spark, right? But the other ones fire?

Maybe something with the dist. advance is causing this?

I'm pretty sure it is something with the dist. advance but this is an area that I have no knowledge of.

Hmm... can you tell me what sort of advance you have on there? There were a coouple different ones over the years. If im thinking correctly, on yours there should be one vacuum hose and an electrical connector going to the distributor.
