My wife has a 1998 328i and she started to notice a soft grind while turning either direction in reverse. It has now evolved into hearing the soft grind while turning everytime. We are going to take it in, but i would like to have some idea of what may be wrong so i don't take it in the shorts at the repair shop.

I had old Toyota truck that did something like that, and strangly enough it was the front brakes, pads were worn down to the sensors. Maybe that could be the problem on yours.

I would check the power steering fluid level. Our cars have really idiotic clamps on the powersteering hose, allowing leaks and whatnot. My car had the same problem, it got so bad over time that it starting groaning and turning became a lot harder. I just filled up more fluid and haven't had time to replace the clamps with screw clamps yet, but thats another summer project.
