318ti power "lag"

i have a 1996 318ti. I drive the car around alot from 9AM to 5... because of my job, and i average about 75 - 100 miles a day. It seems about everyday... mid point.. from like 12pm - 5pm, My car decides that it doesn't want to come out of first, or sometimes, second gear correctly.

If i come out of 1st gear, as soon as I release the clutch. the car feels like it's in a low power mode... no matter how much gas i give it.. it doesn't accelerate any quicker.. All of the sudden.. after about 3 - 4 seconds.. the car surges with power and jumps from a slow crawl of 1000rpm's to 3000 rpm's.. and i immediately have to shift. It seems to do this in 2nd gear. as well.. but not as often.

This is becoming extremely annoying and I have no idea what it may be. The only way I have been able to get around it is by "riding" the clutch all the way through first and applying an excesive amount of gas.. In turn.. overpowering the car.

Any help is Very Much Appreciated... any thoughts on what this may be?

Thank You in advance.

02 sensor

Thank You for your response Jared..

I'm not very knowledgable on the subject of cars... so maybe you could also provide me some insight as to why you think the 02 sensor may be causing this.

Thanks Again!!
