overheating - still

'91 325ic

OK, thought I solved the overheating problem and everything was fine all winter, spring and early summer until this weekend. So far I've replaced the water pump, fan clutch, had system flushed, vacuumed and replaced w/ proper mixture of anti-freeze (no leaks or air pockets in system). I also tightened up ground on temp gauge (cluster) for starters. Now with the high temps of a Virginia summer in place, temp gauge readout indicates 3/4 or just a tad bit over while stopped in traffic - then cools to just over 1/2 while driving on open road.

Stupid question, but should I replace thermostat like I should have done to begin with or temp gauge sending unit or what? I know driving 3/4 or a bit over on the temp gauge wont really hurt the engine but I hate the fact that now out of habit, I look down every few seconds to see where the gauge is hoping it wont overheat or be in the red and leave me stranded.

Any help is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

Greg

OK, checked the fan clutch - yeah, the fan can be stopped by my hand - so the used clutch I just put in is faulty. Great. Does anyone know if I replace it the second time that this should fix the problem from above??

I would have replaced the thermostat at the same time. I dont know if this is the exact cause, however i would check your radiator for blockasge as wel as the thermostat.

Thanks, Jared, I will do that. I always thought the thermostat failed in the open position - or so I've been told - but I should have just went and replaced it anyway.
