AC compressor

My A/C compressor switches off for a period of time usually in extreme hot weather. After a few minutes it switches back on and everything works fine. My guess is some kind of thermal sensor going bad. Can anyone offer some advice?
Thanks

There a lot of possibilities. Here's my best guesses. I would consider all about equally likely.

1) Dirty condensor, poor fan clutch or inoperative electric fan. When temps get high, the high side pressure reaches the cut-off point disabling the compressor. Check condensor and fans closely. Check system pressures to see if they are running high.

2) Compressor clutch gap too large. When hot, there is not enough emf to pull the clutch plate closed. When cools, there is enough. Check by rapping the clutch plate w/ a stick when clutch is open.

3) Defective clutch coil w/ intermittent winding. When hot the winding fault opens killing the compressor, when cool, the fault closes and system works.

good luck

Sounfds like there is either too high or too low of a system charge.

Thanks Jared......I'll check that out. Do you know what normal system pressures are?

IF you look on the inside of the engine bay near the AC compressor, there should be a red label that gives the system operating pressures

Check your system pressure, this is the first place to start.
