BMW Rotors
I gotta get my front brakes done, sensor pad light came on & well, I'm at 61k miles and on the original rotors. So in a contrasting forum, why are the BMW factory rotors softer than American replacements? I'm thinkin about ditchin the BMW part & puttin on something a little harder, like a Raybestos rotor.

Raybestos is a good company. I can't see the problem with buying their rotors/pads if there's an application for your E36.
Only problem, the stopping power may not be as good as BMW rotors/pads. I'm thinking that "if" BMW rotors are softer, then it may be part of the reason why their cars stop so well. I'm not an expert at that, but seems plausible- kinda like the R compound tires: They have superior grip/soft tread, but at the sacrifice of long wear. ?? If you do get Raybestos, please let us knopw what you think. |

Here's my opinion. It's a German car, use German parts..

So you wouldn't do any repairs/modifications with anything other than a German part? Is that realistic? I mean, you've recommended Yokohoma tires in the past, they aint exactly German.

In my opinion, yes, i would never use anything except OE German parts. Especially when it comes to brakes. I really believe that US built components are quite inferior to most German stuff.

Stick with BMW unless you want to upgrade to drilled or slotted. Rotors for that car aren't more that $70 a piece.

I have to take the attitude that there's a reason the brake rotors were manufactured out of a softer alloy, if that is the case. Time after time, I have continued to be amazed at the level of engineering i9n these cars, and I have come to appreciate and accept that this is the way these cars were meant to work.

My wife's car runs Hawk race pads on stock rotors (this is basically a track car). After 3 track days there is no brake fade there is very little wear on the rotors. The pads are starting to "chip" away a bit on the leading edge though. She buys the rotors through Bimmerworld for about $ 30.00 each.
