Question transmission leak

i have a 96 328is that has developed a tranny leak that i've been unable to track down and was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem. i took it to the dealer and had the shift linkage seal replaced due to their recommendation-that appeared to be where it was coming from. it didn't leak for about two months after that-at a track day of course...after a thorough cleaning and some more driving, the top and sides were dry and my leak appears to be coming from my drain plug. has anyone had experience with this problem? i did take it back to the dealer at no charge (twice) and they have attempted to fix it but seem basically baffled.

These plugs are pipe thead, i do believe. you should be able to use teflon tape to seal them. hope this helps.

jenmcd, If they used teflon tape not liquid sealer, and it made it worse, then the tranny housing is more than likely cracked. someone has overtightend the plug, the tape would make the crack bigger. or tranny is leaking from somewhere other than the drain/fill plugs?

Sounds indeed like something is cracked here. The teflon tape would "spread" the crack.

soo liquid sealer is the best thing to use, not teflon tape, or is either ok if there are no cracks??

Teflon tape would be my choice. the key is not over tightening the plugs. steel pipe plug in aluminum housing. the teflon tape lets you seal the threads without getting very tight with the plug. the liquid sealer i usually dont recomend. it dries very hard, and can make taking out the plugs very difficult + you dont want any of that stuff to enter the tranny. a good shop should be able to check for cracks and possibly TIG weld the crack.
