Sterio Coded

When I brought my car in to get a new muffler, they must have killed the battery and the sterio coded, I do not have the card that tells me what the code is can anyone help me get the code.

go to the dealer w/ registration papers and they'll tell you the code based on the numbers on the back of the radio. You might want to pull the radio out and jot down the model number and part numbers (maybe it's the seriel number-- It's been a while)

I lucked out and did it on the phone with my dealer. They want to know you're the legitimate owner before handing over the code, so most want you to visit.

Careful- some will charge you an hour labor to pull the radio out to read the numbers on the back. So try to have the numbers on hand.

Pulling the radio isnt all that hard either, just look for the two small covers on either side of radio, open them and unscrew the small aleen head screws inside.

Jared, have you actually tried to use an allen head wrench on those stereo screws? I don't that statement is accurate. I've tried a few times, & the head is not allen compatible. I think it's square, cause the allen wrench either slips or won't fit, & if your not carefully there is a sizeable chance of stripping the screw head. As much as I'd like to avoid getting the radio driver tool, I kinda think it's unavoidable.

some of the radios are allen, most though are 5 sided and unique. you need one of the bmw "radio tools". You can also find a small flat head that fits in snuggly. If the screws weren't over tightened then there shouldn't be a problem breaking them loose. If they were a standard allen wrench, it'd sure make an "anti-theft" radio easy to steal.

Small flat head huh?, you gotta be talkin about one pretty small flat head. Maybe like an eyeglass repair kit?

yeah, it would be a relatively small one. This will only work if the screws aren't very tight. If they are, you'll probably start breaking those small flat heads. Go by the dealer and pull into the service drive and ask one of the advisors if they have a radio tool. Most do. If not, they should have one of the hourly quick service guys run up there and do it for you at no charge... a courtesy thing <----something many don't think dealerships do anymore.

I've found that if you walk back to the service bays and ask the techs very politely, they sometimes will be cool and let you use the tool to loosen them up real quick.

The guy at the dealership had to input the code three times before my radio started working. I guess it may be to prevent someone from getting lucky and punching in the correct number.

Good luck.
