Question E30 dash thingie ???

What is the little round thing just left of the heater control on E30's? It is about as big around as a dime and looks like it has small vent openings in it. Had it on my 87 now my 92. Still don't know what the heck it is. Thanks

you mean this thing?

i have no idea. nothing about it in the chilton or the haynes manual, as far as i can see. my owner's manual has illustrations showing the heater controls, and you can see this thing in the picture, but the manual doesn't say what it's for.

kookie!

From what I was told, this little vented round thingy is the "speaker" for the various interior tones such as if the door is open or when the tone sounds when the temperature gets below something like 38 degrees.

You know, it's funny, I cant remember the last time I saw a cassette tape in a record store. Odd. It's weird to think that my 16 year old sister does not have to constantly do the fast forward/stop/check/fast forward thing like all us old timers. If you were to look in my house you'd see the collection of obsolete format equipment I have.

Keep rockin' the Beta!

As for the thingie, I dotn think it's a speaker. The speaker always making noise on my car is the one under the dash on the driver's side. If you take off the lower panel, the speaker unit is held in place with a clip. Mine was making so much noise, I pulled it out.

i remember making mix TAPES...now everyone makes mix CDs. you can actually see that there's a tape in my deck (it's the red thingie). it's red b/c the friend who made it for me spraypainted it.

i know that's a bit off topic. sorry.

i'm with jared, i don't think it's a speaker.

When I entered the wrong code for my radio, it made a beeping sound and I believe it came from there.

The door chime is located under the drivers side dash, so it's not for that.

my dad (who ran a bmw dealership for about 15 years) says he votes for the temp sensor idea.

It was supposed to be for an automatic climate control system that never made it into the car
