Timing belt broke on me, and now I'm pretty sure that the valves are bent. A thousand bucks worth of damage. Here's my question: how many valves out of all six cylinders typically get bent, and is it likely that the pistons are damaged bad enough that they have to be replaced? I need to know so I can start ordering the parts.
This is the last car I buy with a timing belt. I'll stick to Dinosaurs like my Camaro from now on.

broken timing belts are usually catastrophic failures. That is why r&r is reccommened at 40K intervals. I hope that isn't the case with yours.

Same thing happened to a relative a couple of years ago and it ended up in my garage for repairs. Unless you are very lucky you are looking at several bent valves. Check with your machinist before have the head repaired, it might be best to look at a rebuilt head or it could be an excellent opportunuty to upgrade!
Timing belt/water pump replacement looks like really cheap maintenance after this job. Good luck! |

Sometimes, you get lucky and the valves arent bent/broken. Most of the time however, the timing belt snaps and the pistons wreck the valves and head. If it did break, the head will have to come off to inspect for damage, at the same time, you can check to see if the pistonds were damaged as well.
