New to the BMW world...need some help!

Hello everyone, I have the opportunity to purchase a 1991 318is in nice shape. The paint is good, looks like its spent its life in a garage, good interior...etc. It has over 200K miles. After further investigation, the 1st bearing on the intake cam has siezed causing it to jump time and bend most of the intake valves. The exhausts seem fine, but I have not removed the head yet to see for sure. I can buy this car for $500, and I was wondering what I would have invested in a rebuild. Im not looking for any performance upgrades, just re-ring it, new bearings/seals etc. Where can I source the camshaft housing for the Intake....does anyone have a used one?? and maybe a cam?? I have tons of experience rebuilding engines, mainly domestic stuff and Porsches, but I wanted to see what you guys think, and if you had any good used parts sources...thanks in advance!

Artie

Artie, might want to try Bavarian Engine Exchange Ranch Rancho Cordova Ca. WWW.************ . I have one of their engines in my 325e. unlimited mileage for 2 years !!! I had thought about doing the rebuild myself, but couldnt find a machine shop willing to touch my block or head and reman separately was out of the question. I paid about 2800 for the long block with oil pan. all I needed was my front covers and intake/fuel sys. Runs great after 3 yrs.

well you could try www.bmwwholesale.net they are my favorite place for used parts, they might have something for ya, too bad its not an e, i have a great engine that i need to get rid of, i have service records on the car dating back to 87..........any one interested, i am in the process of stripping the interior, but with winter here, i am not going to strip the engine, trans, or rear end....there may be some other left overs too, just depeneds on how fast i find a buyer and what i can pull out of it, ,

i have taken most of whats under the hood except the engine, all doors trunk lid, tail lights and most of the interior, but has all for tires if you want to tow or flat bed it home

Thanks for all the help, I have looked at those sites, and im still trying to decide the best route to go. The engine exchange looks like a great deal, but im just not sure if I can swing all the expense right now. I should have the engine out and torn down by next weekend, so I will let you guys know what I find...and whether or not this thing is worth rebuilding. Thanks for all the help!

Artie:

Do you have a digital camera? Whay not document the removal process for those on the list that have never done it? I see tons of activity on the Porsche side of this website with posts using lots of pics. What do you say?

Thanks

Jason

Jason:

Sounds like a plan, I will try my best to document the removal and teardown with the camera. This is my first major BMW "service" so we shall see how it goes. Ill document it the best I can, and hopefully it helps!

Check Ebay, I see engines on there all the time. You may be better off just buying a complete engine for the car than rebuilding any major engine damage
