Idle Surges on 325i...
I already checked the forum and could not find an answer to my problem...
I recently performed the motronic diagnostic check (depress Gas pedal 5 times) and it came back Code 1222 - Lambda 1 - probably bad O2 sensor (from what I've read this seems to be the problem. I started the car and the idle now really surges from 1K -2K. I have no airleaks and recently replaced the air boot and hoses as per Jareds recommendation. What could this be? a bad idle control valve? is it just coincidence that this happened after the disgnostic or does something need to be reset?? Other than that, I love my recently aquired car. It burns a little oil, but is fast and drives straight. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Check that the throttle switch is properly adjusted, and double check your vacuum hoses, valve cover gasket and the oil filler cap gasket.
I have a tech article on how to adust the throttle switch. email me for it. |

ok, went and checked the above mentioned areas...no leaks or problem hoses.
However, I forgot to mention one thing: The A/C was on when the idle went haywire...I forgot I turned it on this morning. I expect this to be the cause, right? The question is, is it normal. Just ran the car w/o the AC and the idle is o.k.

Ok, well turning the A/C on will increase the idle a slight bit. This is normal. It puts a load on the engine, adn the fuel injection automatically compensates by bumping up the idle about 200RPM or so. This sounds like it's a out of adjustment throttle switch. The switch is set to activate the idle control valve at a certain RPM, it may be that the A/C clicking on raises the idle high enough to bypass the switch. Try adjusting it and see what happens.

update - Idle
ok...I read something about disconnecting the battery to "reset" everything. I did that just out of curiosity.
Anyway, there is no more surging idle (for now). it goes up a tad when turning on the A/C, but not up to 2k like before?? Just an Update...I hope this doesn't return. Thanx for the help, Jared.

I had and sometimes still have this issue. I replaced an electrical pump that is located on the right side attached to the block. This thing is an actuator and it can get dirt inside.
Another thing may be your Catalitic Converter. I heard they are supposed to be replaced around 120k miles. My car has 205k and they need to be cleaned or repaird/replaced. Kelley Brown

bad o2 sensor
an bad o2 sensor will cause the check engine light and also the limp home mode.
If the o2 sensor output is out of range the ECU uses a very rich map to get you to a mechanic. Change the sensor and see it it helps. Later, |
