Hood Closure Adjustment
Is there a way to adjust how far down the hood locks into the stud holes of the engine bay? The closure studs (mounted to under side of hood), look like they can be adjusted in or out based on the screw at the top of them, but I wanna make sure. The hood release (in cockpit) really takes a hard tug to release the hood, & I was hoping to allow it to have a bit more play.

The pic below is of a hood latch stud. It's actually an integrated piece that is the latch striker and the retainer unit. Other cars have a latching mechanism, but then have reverse stops that you need to adjust to limit where the body line is when the hood closes. On the Beemer, the hood has spring loaded adjusters. You adjust the striker down to where it latches and holds the right body lines... the springs keep that tension on the hood to hold it in place (with the hood down and latched, you should be able to push down on the hood and feel it slightly 'give'... that is you overcoming the springs). Now if your latch mechanism is tough, and your strikers are adjusted to where you have a nice seamless body line when your hood closes, then the toughness is probably somewhere in the cable system.

So can I adjust the depth of the striker into it's engine bay hole? Geez, this is gettin' pretty phalic. Seriously, are you saying that if there is no give in the hood, then the the hood can't be adjusted? What about that retaining nut at the top of the striker?

The retaining nut at the top of the striker is just that... a retaining nut. To adjust the depth of the striker, you loosen that retaining nut, then use a slotted screw driver in the tip of the striker to adjust the depth. Once you have desired depth (yep, pretty phalic), then lock down that retaining nut.
If your hood is down and tight in the closed/locked position, with no play in it (meaning if you push down firmly on it you can't get any movement), but your body lines are flush, then you are right at the limit of where you can adjust your hood to. If this is the case, then it is no wonder that your hood release pull is tight. If your hood is even the slightest bit lower on body lines than your fenders, then you can increase the depth of your strikers a little to give yourself some more room... which it will make the pull easier. |

How do I get that retainer & spring off the striker to adjust the depth? I couldn't figure that out.

Oh... the spring and retainer stay on. You just use an open-end wrench to loosen the nut, then turn the striker from the end. The spring and tensioner just follow. Once you get desired depth, spin your retaining nut back down and lock it in place with the open end wrench.

Supe, that tech article you had for foglights in another thread has a nice little blurb on hood latch adjustments. I think this should answer your questions... it even shows how the striker is adjusted.
