Whats wrong?
My stereo just displays 'Code' on the front. What does this mean?
And, the little screen to the left of it that can display temperature and etc is wierd. It keeps switching to all of this random compilations of strange figures and looks as if it cannot make up its mind as to what it wants to display. Does anyone know what this means? Thanks for anu advice! ![]() |

Hmm,
The radio has lost power and wants to make sure you are not a thief. It is asking for a number provided by BMW, usually listed in the back of the radio manual, before it starts working again.
BMWs answer to radio theft, caused more problems for the owners than the thiefs. If unable to find it in the manual, you need to contact the local BMW dealer, with all the information he will require. Later, |

Thanks, I dont have the radio manual so I will have to go to the dealer. Do they have a service charge for this?
Also, can you put a basic after market cd player in it or is the radio special to the car? |

Hmm,
They usually do not charge, just a pain to ask.
I have used a different CD player in my e24, it is a Sony. It has a trunk mounted 6 CD player and I had to rewire the speakers. Later, |

Mine is reading 100c and no one saw it
So here is what works most of the time.
With the key in the "Radio" position (Radio and OBC light up, but not the instrument cluster), press the "CODE" button. Then push the little reset-hole with a Pen and hold it, 'till the computer blinks in the display, and it will ask you for a time and date entry. - You now have re-adapted the coding plug to the computer. - Normally the computer goes into a PPPP mode when the car has been boosted, or some other very drastically voltage changes have occurred. You will then need to select "Mileage" and push the little reset-hole with a pen to select english as the language. Later, |

Do you need a special tool to remove the stereo?
Also, my little computer thing doesnt have a reset button. I have the plain computer thing. I wish I had the better computer. I heard it can be upgraded but it is sort of a pain in the butt to do it. |

You don't really need a special tool - you can get away with a small screwdriver. I have a tech article on this coming up (just did the radio replacement in my 325)...
