92 325is won't start

92 325is won't start. There is no voltage to the plugs, fuel pump or fuel pump fuse. I have replace the fuel pump relay and the DME relay. Prior to this it was running rough, stalling and hard to start. Replace the vaccuum line to the fuel pressure regulator and it ran great for two days. On the third day it would crank but wouldn't start.

Lightbulb Starting Points <groan>

Hi, Marc.

Just shooting in the dark with remote diagnosis, but a couple of things to try - but first, do you have the Bentley or Electronic Troubleshooting Manual (ETM, cheap on CD's) for the car? One of those will make the next steps lots easier . . .

In any event, my suspicions center on the crankshaft and cam position sensors. If you pull the fuel injection ECU and unplug it, use an ohmmeter to check for about 900 ohms from pins 16 & 44 (camshaft position sensor) and pins 67 & 68 (crankshaft position sensor) on the mammoth connector.

If either of these is open, whether a corroded connector or a defective sensor (both can happen) the ECU will conclude that there is no turning engine out there that deserves fuel.

Good luck!

Lightbulb Last Minutes Thoughts

(I love it when I think of things after hitting the 'send' button)

First, replacing the relays was a good start.

Second, I am presuming that replacing the vacuum line having it run again was a random act. Possibly not true, but that is my working hypothesis.

Larry, thanks. It was running before I replaced the vaccuum line just poorly. I don't think it had anything to do with current problem I just like to give all the information. Who publishes the ETM on CD, the cd's from Bentley are $99 and I have seen the Bentley repair manual for $57

Manuals and CD's

Marc:

The Bentley is somewhat less than you mention, $40 at Pelican:

The CD sets are available from a number of private sources. There is some controversy about their lineage, which is pursued on the bimmerforums. I can point you to two of the spots on eBay, and I am sure there are more. A usual price is $35 to $50 for a relatively current 5-disc set. Mine was $35, but I only end up using the ETM's - the other tools are very clunky, IMHO, so I gave up on them.

Have fun! Larry F.

I agree w/Larry for the most part, except never replace parts before testing them first if at all possible. The sensors would be my first guess.
