e30 transmission shifting late

My 91 ix auto trans shifts late into 2nd gear when you first drive it but after it shifts 1 or two times it is fine until it sits for a while. I've heard that this is a relatively common problem but does anyone know how to fix it?

Don't have an automatic but...have experience with them. When was the last time the tranny was flushed and filter cleaned / changed? Are the tranny fluids correct? Are the bands slipping in any other gear?

Late into first gear means ... it holds 1st for a longer than normal period of time?

Check the fluid level first. Low fluid level can cause this..

Had the tranny serviced. fluid level is good. doesn't have problems in any other gear and once it shifts a couple times it shifts fine. greg

Did you make sure the shop used the correct grade ATF?

Did you have the tranny serviced at a Jiffy Lube type place, or at an actual BMW shop? Sometimes they can get this stuff wrong...
