Oil Filter wrench question

Which part do you recommend for removing the M44 engine oil filter housing cap?

Answer to your question...

Well, I would consider it a socket since it fits over the top of the cap of the oil filter housing, however it is not a normal socket since the diameter is something like 70mm+. The site below shows the cap. I need something that takes that cap off with a socket wrench. I already have a plastic piece that my socket wrench fits into, however mine does not fit the oil filter housing cap. I hope this helps.

So you're saying you have the wrong wrench. Go to the dealer and buy the right one. It's like 15 bucks. Make sure you torque it back on to spec or you'll break the filter housing.

I went to my dealer and was told they don't sell such a part. That was one of the first things I did. Whether they were honest with me or not, I wasn't able to get the part. So while your advice is appreciated, it's not very helpful. I bought an adjustable cam wrench over two weeks ago that worked so your post isn't very timely, either. Thanks for the response and have a good week.

My girlfriend's '96 M-Power 318ti has the same to to the oil filter canister as yours does. And it is a sunofa***** to get off too. I just use a pair of channellocks to get it loose, then use my hands. I sure wish they used the same simple 17mm bolt like on every other Beemer. I actually like the canister filter compared to my e30's, because it's very acessable. The problem is that I can't find K&N oil filters, which are really nice.

You can buy the filter wrench to fit that at most any autoparts store. Also, the Porsche wrench will fit, and it's only like $8 at the dealer.

If you are in a pinch, just get a old leather belt and wrap it around two sticks, then use it to remove the cap..

My dealer had one, but it's cheaper from Snap-On. It's supposed to be 76mm and 14 segments but others that are close will probably fit well enough to work.
