BMW Roundel Stock exhaust Q

99 e36....323isa.
lookin at the twin tail pipes i see a "flapper" door on the right pipe. its open. should it be open or closed? meaning closed at low rpm for more torque and opposite at hi rpm? its open right now w/ the engine cold.
just curious.
thanks

Well considering that the door is hooked up to the intake manifold via vacuum lines and a vacuum reservoir, iuts probably a fair bet that the reason is exactly what you described. Probably to help out with more torque.

Thanks Jared! Guess I gotta look at it more closely. It seems to be in the open position all the time. Even after sitting overnight.
Wonder if its related to the buzz, then what sounds like a pressure valve opening and air escaping in the engine bay after turning off the key.....Still new to the BMW marque...been working on rotaries for awhile.
BTW...nice new facilities! Visited there today. Had lunch w/ Bobby. Would've been nice to meet you.
Anyway....back to your regularly scheduled program
