What does this dash warning light mean?

My friend has a 325is and there is a light in the dash that she can't figure out what it means. It's a circle with 3 dashes on each side. Anyone know what this is?

The car is a '92 and the light is at the bottom of the instrument cluster towards the right side. Here is a crude drawing of what it looks like.

it's brake pad wear indicator. Time to replace brake pads.

Thanks. Interestingly enought I just put new front pads in for her today. Will get to the rears next weekend. How does one reset the light? Pull the negative on the battery?

the light is for front and rear pads! the light is reset once you change both front and rear brake pad sensors which is just a wire which circuit is mechanically broken when brake pads are worn too thin.

You need to replace the brake pad wear sensors at the same time you replace the brake pads. There is one sensor for the front on the drivers side, and one for the rear on the passenger side.

Sometimes if the sensors are not worn through, you can re-use them. Otherwise, they will need to be replaced.
