BMW Roundel Radio Questions...

I am a new owner of a 96 318IC. I love the car but…..exactly, where in the truck can I find the CD changer harness? Also, how do I tell if my radio has DSP?

Check the left hand side of the trunk compartment. If you see a sticker there that says your car is wired for the changer, then the harness should be behind the paneling of the back seat, passenger side. If you don't have the sticker saying your car is hard wired for the changer then you probably don't have it.

By the way... what's DSP?

DSP. Digital Signal Processing. I believe it's used to separate a large number of radio signals simultaneously - I think it's designed to assist in the reception of satellite radio.

You got the acronym right, but then lost your way. DSP is digital signal processing, but in stereo terms it means that the signal coming from the source unit is altered digitally before it goes to the amp stage. This can accomplish several things: create the appearance of a soundstage beyond what physically exists (make your car sound like a symphony hall or jazz club), alter the frequency response (usually to tune it for specific drivers -- like a super eq) or change the apparent reference center (tune it to sound better at the driver's seat, for example) and more. The radio thing you refer to is actually called Diversity Tuning. This is used in terrestrial radio to optimize broadcasts and cancel out out of phase reflectived waves. Satellite tuners use a single line of sight array to capture the broadcasts. As far as I know, no one uses a diversity tuner on a satellite radio system (XM or Sirius).

Thanks for the information guys.... I looked for a sticker - but did not find one. I guess just because my stock radio has a Tape/CD button, doesn't mean it is pre-wired for a changer. Oh well, at least I have an excuse to buy a nice dash unit. A MP3 player would probbaly hold more songs than a 6 pack changer.

This may sound cheesey, but I'm really going to miss the instant weather band - once you are use to it, I use it every morning.

Do I dare open the can of worms and ask for a replacement speaker recommendation...?
