Question What is the deal with temp gauges!

I have had an ongoing problem with my temp gauge (89 325is); it is always pegged. After reading through posts and such I have noticed it is a common problem. Now maybe I could get some tips. First I will tell you what I know isn't the problem.

The grounding nut on the back
The SI batteries
The temp sender
Nothing was done to the car before this started, it just happened one day.

I am really struggling to figure this out. Could someone give me some tips on how to test the wiring to the gauge and the gauge itself? I have a volt/ohm meter. Or do you have any other ideas? I am desperate to figure this out since the weather is horribly hot and I afraid to even run my AC, heck I am half afraid to drive the thing at all.

Thanks in advance for any help!

check for continuity between the wire to the gauge and to the sender. use longer wires if you need to.
