Pilot bearing Q

I put a used M20 in my 325 Manual trans. E30. It came out of a automatic transmission car. Now that the whole car is together, I realized I forgot to put a new pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft. Would that engine have even come with one if it was from a automatic trans car?

More importantly, did you change flywheels?

I was at least smart enough to know I needed to use my flywheel and a new OEM clutch & throw-out bearing.
Still, I'm sure it wreck havoc not to have that support on the input shaft, if in fact Automatic car's cranks don't come with them.

You would be correct, the automatic transmissions dont have pilot bearings. However the flywheel from your old motor would have one. Is it possible that it was not pressed out when you took the flywheel off?

The pilot bearing on E30's is actually in the end of the crank. There is a hole in the middle of the flywheel and the input shaft goes through that and contacts the bearing on the other side. I only know that much because I have my old motor, and the original pilot bearing is still in that crank. I was just hoping maybe the automatic cars came with them or used them too.

My guess would be no for Jared as he is a moderator here and is on the sister Porsche boards as well.

I am starting to look over there b/c seems to be more technical input from a greater number of people. Similar to www.bmwe30.net.
