Question question

I have a display unit on my car in the dash under the stereo. And I dont know the name of it to buy or repair it, the words are coming up but not completly its like parts of the letters are missing and the time only shows 2 dots. Does anyone know what this display unit for information is called ?Its the unit that shows whats wrong with the car.

It's typically callled 'The Computer'.

There are several on sale on ebay at this very moment.

Search for (bmw e36 computer.)

Pelican may sell new ones. They seem to be able to get OEM parts for great prices. Call if you can't find it.

It comes out by pressing a tab reached through the top of the "sunglass" tray below it and pulling forward. The two cables connected to it have a cool lever to release them.

If you need the BMW name and part # I can get it on Tuesday but my ETK isn't currenty installed at home.

Don't know anything about common problems related to 'The Computer' sorry.

It's actually typically referred to as the "OBC" or "On Board Computer." They can be a pain in the ass and different models with different functions have different wiring (makes sense). Check out this link. Most people on this Forum that are looking for one seem to steer to E-bay.

OBC incompatibility

question

I found one on ebay excellent price for it also, and I noticed the post you told me to go to was correct, it also informed me that it wasnt compatiable with mine since mine has a few less buttons then the one I am looking at, however he does include the wiring harness for it. Does this solve the problem of compatiability, also the language is in german, and the one I am buying is in english I mean it doesnt matter if it reads eithier as long as it reads, however, I just need to know if its going to be compatiable as long as I have the wiring harness that comes with the new computer.
