I have a 1992 318is 5speed. I used the tech article on pelicanparts which was very helpful on removing the transmission. Problem is I have all the bolts out and the transimission is stuck on the output shaft or something I can't see. Its bolt free since I can spin the tranny back and forth plus its about 1 inch from the engine.
How do I get unstuck from the output shaft ? P.S. Starter bolts weren't that hard could reach the nuts by hand. |

I only have one jack so its on the transmission. Should I have another on the oil pan ?
Ive tried tilting the tranny down or having it level with no luck. |

You need to have a jackstand (not a floor jack) under the oil pan to support the engine. Keep in mind that when the transmission is in the car, it acts as the rear mount for the engine. If you remove the transmission there is nothing to support the rear of the engine. Hence, it will come crashing down once it clears the input shaft. This is VERY dangerous. take a look at this photo.....http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/E36-Clutch_Replace/pic05.jpg THis is what you need to do. If not, you risk severe damage to both yourself and your engine.
Most likely, what is happening is that the tranny is getting caught up on the input shaft and preventing it from sliding off, due to the weight of the engine. DO NOT try to force it off, you risk damaging the input shaft. Take the weight off the shaft with the engine supported by a jackstand and it should come off. Do you have the car supported by jack stands? If not, go to your nearest hardware/auto parts store and buy some immediatley. I cannot stress enough the importance of this. |

Then I guess its a good thing the transmission has not come out. I'll buy another jack stand and probably another floor jack.
Ramps under the front two tires with 4 jack stands on the jacking points of the e36 and the floor jack holding the transmission. Thats what i have now. I did'n put anything on the oil pan I was afraid to punch into it but I guess the engine crashing down would be much worst. Thanks.

The oil pan will support the weight of the engine. It is cast aluminum, which may seem brittle, but it is strong. It might be a good idea to put a piece of wood in between the jackstand and the pan to evenly distribute the weight.
NEVER trust ramps or a floor jack to hold a car up. They are only for lifting the car. Last edited by Jared at Pelican Parts; 10-21-2004 at 12:55 PM.. |

Ok I added a pic so you can see the car as it is. The ramps are just there but not supporting any weight. I found another jack stand for the oil pan. Will post update later.
