only the back rest of my seat gets heated, not the seat part. I have nothing to compare it to so my question is "do both the back and seat get heated or just the back" If both then I guess I have a bad matts-whatever that is.

The bottom of the seat is indeed supposed to heat up, not just the back. I don't know how things are wired, but I would suspect that whatever wire carries power to the seat-bottom-cushion heating element has become unplugged or otherwise disconnected.

There are to heating mats- bottom and back. Most likely your bottom mat is bad (common problem). Bottom is different than back. Around $90 for part and pain to replace it

Not that I know of--but I'm not very up on the BMW side of things. (Or, frankly, anything but the 914 stuff....)

Wow! Thanks. It looks a little too 'tentacle' for me. I'll check for loose connections under the seat then take it in to the shop if I find none, but thanks for the info.
