Fault Code 1241, '91 318is
OK, the Check Engine light has been flashing at me today, so I pulled the codes when I got home.
Comes up as 1241, which, according to the technical article on this page (http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/Mult-Code_Reading/Mult-Code_Reading.htm) , is either the Mass Air Flow Sensor or, it could possibly be the Idle Air valve. According to that page, "Codes 1241 and 2241 can be incorrectly generated on 1992 and later models. The actual fault is a improperly operating idle air valve, and the need for an updated EPROM. See BMW bulletins for more details." However, I have a few issues... 1) My car is a 1991 318is, which, although on the surface this may seem to rule out the IAC, may not, since I have the M42 engine, which is not covered in the E30 Bentley. 1991 was, of course, the only year that this motor was in an E30. 2) I replaced the IAC several months ago, trying to chase down a hunt at idle. Never did fix that, although I replaced that valve and all of the vacuum lines. 3) I can't find any of those bulletins... Any help out there?

I'd love to rule that out, though, since the part is over $400... The Bentley I have doesn't address testing the MAF on this motor. Any tips on how to test the MAF out before I sink the money into a new one? I hate to throw parts at the car if I don't have to, particularly expensive ones.

UPDATE:
There doesn't seem to be any consistent cause for the C/E light to come on, but when it does, if I sharply lift off the throttle pedal, the light will go it. It will come back on again once I step on the pedal again, but I can make it go out every time by doing that. If I gradually let off the pedal, the light stays on. And, about half the time, if I let the car sit idling after I've driven it, after a few minutes the light comes on and the idle starts fluctuating between about 550-600 RPM and 900-1000 RPM. Any thoughts? I used the procedures in the E30 Bentley for testing the older AFM. It seems to test OK, although the resistance change as I move the flap limit to limit is not as smooth as I would like it to be, nor is it very close to what the E30 Bentley calls for on the older AFM. I have no idea what the resistance is really supposed to be for this car, I haven't gotten the E36 Bentley yet.
