Where to buy a new speedometer?
Well, for those of you that have been following my earlier thread about the speedometer problems I've been experiencing, I had the chance to finally take the instruments out and re-flow the connections in the rear.
After removing the speedo and checking the connections at the rear, I could only see 2 cracks in the factory soldered connections. So after re-flowing the connections, zipping everything up and going for a drive, I was under the impression that everythings a-ok. Well.....the speedo worked but now the odometer was acting up; as the far right digit rolled it emitts a sound like that of the second hand of a clock...tick tick tick. Honestly I didn't care. The speedo worked and I could only hear the odo at low speeds. I rested well lastnight after a job well done. Then this morning-Driving to work, hlafway there cruising at 70, the speedo plunges to zero (along with my state of mind) but quickly returned to 70, and was trouble free the remaining 20 minutes of the commute. Not only that, my commute is 23 miles, but the odo registered it as 15, so the odometer is dragging. Which leads me to ask: can I just pop in a new speedometer and call it a day???? I'm (almost) at my wits end on this and don't really want to deal with it anymore. Any thoughts/input/ideas would be greatly appreciated!!! Paul |

...and how does one do this???? I'm all for taking care of this DIY, as I just got some quotes for repair, and they're wayy to much.
BTW, does anyone have a good photo of the "cracks" that appear on the board? I could only see one on the top left are of the board. I know what I did helped because it's working better, but it's almost like I missed some cracks. Thanks! Paul

Might be better to just find a new board, remove th gauges from the old board and transfer it over. This is rather delicate solder work.

Gauage Issues
I am also having problems with my guages, not just the speedo. From left to right: the fuel gage works sometimes, othertimes it will stick on completly full, sometimes hitting the top of the insturment cluster puts it in place. The Speedometer has worked once since i've owned the car, for no apparent reason. The tach is the only thing that works normally. The temp gauge, after starting the car and letting it warm up suddenly pops to the normal range. After spending hours of research on these boards, I replaced the speedo sensor in the rear differential, no fix. Replaced the SI board with a refurbished unit with new batteires. Still no fix. Have heard of "reflow the connectors" but not quite sure where or what this means. Thank you in advance.
Another note: the guy i bought this from knew about the intermitent speedo issues and said it was a white chip. The only thing i can thing of but don't know what it is, is a small chip that goes into the front right of the insturment cluster. Could that be it? What is it and what does it do? Wow Bk, wish I could help with your issues, but my problem is (knock on wood) soley with the speedo.
As for the reflowing issue, search my original topic on the matter; It contains some excellent input and advice from the guys on the board. As for my problem, I just contacted Bavarian Auto Recycling, and they can provide me with a used speedo matching my mileage for $125 w/6 month warrenty-I might look into this. |

What about having it fixed by Palo Alto or North Hollywood Speedometer repair.
