never heard of a bavaria edition.. I dont really understand what would make it any different, considering all BMWs are from Bavaria... Got any pics? Whats so different about it?

All I know is the suspension package is different. By the way do you know where the speedometer cable is located? neither my speedometer or odometer works.

Hello dragonlady,

I googled bavaria a bit and didn’t come up with much. Seems like I saw some notations to bavaria models being associated with older e3 (‘72-’74?) cars and I’m not very savvy on the older cars.. Perhaps others here are more familiar with the older models and can be of more help. My guess is that someone took a ‘bavaria’ badge and put it on your e30.(?)

http://members.aol.com/BMWBavaria/

Non-working speedometers plague many e30 ( cars such as yours. They do not use a speedometer cable, but use an electric pulse sent from the rear differential to the instrument cluster in the dash. Typical problems occur at the differential sender unit, (water gets under the rubber boot which covers the unit and corrodes connections) or solder connections within the instrument cluster itself.

Do a search on ‘speedometer’ here on the Pelican site.. it’s come up before. Also try google search on ‘e30 speedometer’ you’ll find many articles on the subject.. such as
http://www.unofficialbmw.com/speedo/speedo.htm

Best wishes,
-Simon

This car was bought in Germany and brought to the US so maybe its a european model. I'm going to call bmw to check, since it has the orginal paint job and no signs of their being a 318i emblem. Your probably right, but hoping i have something unique.

Another thing i noticed is that it sdoes not have the stock steering wheel. The wheel you have was not available in 1984

I called the bmw dealer and they said the edition I have is a real one. Its just rare, he also said that the difference is the trim.

I think someone is pulling your chain. That is NOT a european model - it has the US spec "diving board" bumpers on it.

As for the suspension, it looks from the ride height to be stock. What did they tell you was different about the trim?

The only things Inoticed were the out of place badge in the rear and the steering wheel that has been replaced.

It is from Germany I have the papers that I cant understand other the city. In fact I have probably almost all the papers of stuff that's been done since it was bought. Again, some of which are in German. As for the suspension, the bmw dealer didn't say that was different and he didn't elaborate on what was different about the trim.

Okay, I had to call a few different dealers one of which pulled the vin on my car. Here's the deal, You are right there is no Bavaria edition. However, the orginal owner did a european delivery which means he went down to bmw in this here in California ordered the one he wanted was told it would be ready at such & such a date, he then flew to germany to pick it up. In europe, you can get special accessories that you cant get here for various reasons (whatever) one of which is the bavaria emblem, the original owner must have requested it be put on there in germany, then when he was done doing whatever he was doing europe, droped the car off at port (which is what the papers I have must be for)to be delivered back here in the U.S. As for the stearing wheel to options were available, one of which is the normal or you could get the sport wheel, which after describing to the bmw guy, said it sounded like i had the sport wheel which is still considered a stock steering wheel.

So thank you for getting me off my ass to find out more about the car. And for the advise on my speedometer, it is appreciated. How about a place that sells fairly cheap parts for my normal car.

total B.S. thats a US spec car. It's got the US bumpers. Euro cars didnt have those. You also have all of the US trim

and as for the steering wheel, nope, not a stock wheel for 1984... You have the later style sport wheel which didnt come out until the early 90's. That wheel was put on at one time. Typically, sport steering wheels were only part of the "s" package, which was never offered on the 318i.

Here's the thing.. 318i's are the bottom of the ladder. They got almost none of the options for the 3 series. The cars that got all of the goodies were the 6 cylinder models, and even then, not a whole lot was offered until they came out with the 325i in 1987.

If this was a special edition, it would have leather seats and panels and the harman kardon premium sound system (which it doesnt)

It's just a regular 318i that someone put a bavaria badge on

Pelican can supply you with just about anything you need for these cars.

About your speedo, that is most commonly the sender unit in the differential. easy fix..

You'll want to first check continuity to the gauge and make sure none of the fuses are tripped.

Also, the service interval board (little green/yellow/red lights on dash) can be the fault. When the batteries in these boards die, they can cause the guages to stop working...

Do a search on our boards under BMW speedometer. You'll find more than you need to know about it...
