Question Dinan CAI

I have a Dinan Cold Air Intake on my 1995 M3......and it's filthy. I bought this intake quite a while ago for my last car ('92 325i) and I don't remember what kind of filter is on it and this information isn't listed on Dinan's website.

I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me if it's a K&N filter (or something similar). Can it be cleaned and if so, how do I do it and do I need to buy any special cleaning solution? I've heard that K&N filters need to be "oiled" after cleanging. Do I need to do this?

I'd appreciate any input. I'd rather not have to shell out the cash for a replacement filter from my local BMW dealership.

There is a K&N filter recharge kit available at most Pep Boys, this sells for around $15 - essentially you remove the filter, shake off loose particles, spray it with filter cleaner, let it dry (give it plenty of time to air dry, eg 12 hours, don't shake it dry or use heat guns as they can damage the filter), then spray it with filter oil, all of which is included in this k&n recharge kit. I am 99.9% sure the dinan intake uses a k&n filter, to be positive you could always call dinan direct.

Thanks. That was helpful. I picked up the recharger kit. The filter IS in fact either a K&N or something similar, but I found out that the reason that it says on the protective sock over the filter not to clean and reuse it is that (according to Dinan) if the filter is either under or over oiled, damage can result to the mass air meter. Not sure I believe that that's the truth and not just Dinan making a buck where they can....

It's true, over-oiling will affect the sensor.

What other mods have you done to the car besides the CAI?

B&B Tri-flow exhaust. I'm not sure whether it has a software upgrade or not (even though I know it should with these mods). The B&B and another intake were on the car when I bought it. I was so excited when I got the car that I didn't even think to ask about that. It wouldn't surprise me if he didn't do the software, because the intake that was on the car when I got it was crap. (Short ram "cold air" intake, with no heat shielding.....effectively a hot air intake).
