help 320I 24v 1993 m50 wont start

hi there, im at a complete loss the car overheated and blew a hose, fixed that seemed ok, two days later it wont start at all, turns over but no spark. Garage have had it for almost 2 weeks nothing showing on diagnostic computor and they have no idea whats wrong with it. I saw a posting on here saying my 1993 model has obd 1 computor which has manual codes you can access in car tried this nothing happens at all. Garage has suggested replaceing sensor on crank and cam, and fuel pump! but as they don't know whats wrong and are just seemingly trying to get me to pay for various parts im a bit hesitant to do it, especially as on the day it broke i was meant to be part exchanging for an estate as pregnant with twins so its not big enough! Any one have any ideas what to try, do, or replace? I would be majorly gratefull for anyones advice, thanks luv lindsey

I assume when you say no spark you simply mean it wont attempt to start. A mechanic should be able to easily identify if the problem is no spark or no fuel. It's when it seems to be getting both that the diagnosis becomes difficult. Replacing part for no reason is silly.

Try to find a good mechanic. Contact your local BMWCCA chapter and ask them or simply use one of the club sponsor mechanics.

I agree, take it to an honest shop. these people sound like they are either not being straight with you or they just don't know. either way, they'll be expensive.

To play devil's advocate, it's a little hard to get a second opinion when the car doesn't run!

OTOH, it's hard to make a diagnosis on this little...

The fuel pump either runs or it doesnt. If it does they can test pressure and volume. If it doesnt run they can test if it is the pump or an electrical problem. Replacing the pump as a "shot in the dark" for a car that wont start is silly and I would tow it somewhere I trust.

But you're right without talking to the mecahnic it is hard for us to say he is not qualified. It could just be a miscommunication.

Did they replace the filter? A dirty/clogged filter could have caused the pump to go out. If you arent sure how old it is I would put it on a short list of things to do.
