e36 instrument cluster spiking

my instrument cluster goes on and off all gauges go to zero and after a minute or two they come back on and act normal and then do it all over again. Is there a relay or resistor that can be going bad?what I have noticed is that it temperature sensitive...If its hot outside and I dont turn on a/c its happens alot but if I run the a/c and keep it cold in the car I dont have any problems.I dont think its related to a/c circutry though..if its cold outside and I dont turn a/c on the gauges are still fine.it only happens when its hot inside the car. Thanks for any help.I have a 1993 318is
