Unhappy 1.9 Bimmer Overheating

1995 318is started overheating,where do we look first??It's got the 1.9 4 cyl..Do I change trermostat,or go right to the water pump?HELP!!Also,even thought it was over heated,electric fan did not kick on,or does it only come on with AC on?

The fan on my E36 comes on to assist the stock fan even with the AC off.

If the pump went out, the engine will overheat and the hot water wont reach the radiator so the fan wouldnt kick on. Yours is in the years of the plastic pump impeller but I dont know if the 318's used the same type of pump.

My guess is water pump.
