alternator connection problem????

I have a 96 318is.
A couple of weeks ago I had to replace my starter, which I did. Got it up and running - immediately, my battery light started coming on and off. Next came my ABS and Traction Control - then I died.
I figured Alternator, so I just replaced that, recharged my Battery, took it for a spin. Battery light is on again. I checked the battery connection, everything looks fine.
Any suggestions on what this could be? On a side note, when replacing my Starter I noticed that there was what appeared to be an extra Wire that was duct taped over and hanging loose in the same general vicinity as the Starter wires. Could this be the Alternator Ground Wire? Where does the Alternator Ground Wire go to?
Thanks in advance for any help. Please note, while I can pick up a socket wrench, I'm not very mechanically literate. Please use layman speech for me.
Thanks!
Jonathan

follow up to this problem

Alright, figured out that my the positive line from my alternator is not connected. Went to connect it to the positive line going out from the starter (looked like the most probable place that this should go). When I did this, however, started up the car, got a horrible whirring noise. When I accelerate, even worse.
Any thoughts on what I might have done? Where should the positive (red) wire connect to if not there.
HELP!!
Thanks!
Jonathan
