What Is That Noise?!?!?!

My '96 328i has a high pitch squealing noise coming from underneath the car somewhere right in between the engine and the transmission- close to the flywheel. Car seems to run fine except for the noise but its staying in the garage until I can figure this out. My guess is that something is rubbing against the flywheel.

Anyone?

Belts and belt tensioners are the first thing I would check. But wait... You said between the engine and tranny?

How old is your clutch?

Yeah that was what I thought at first too, It sound like a belt squealing, but the sound is nowhere near the belt. I just got the car about 3 months ago but its an automatic.

Does it chage with RPM? Does it change when in or out of gear? What about while in motion?

does the sound change if you put some pressure on the clutch pedal or depress it slightly? Could be the release bearing that is rubbing against the pressure plate

Well the sound is like a real loud, high pitch "squeak squeak squeak" and it does increase(or go faster) with the rpms. Whether or not your in gear, its the same though. Its also not a stick shift. It sounds VERY similar to a belt problem- in fact thats immediately what I thought it was but once i got underneath there its a different story.

Everything else is fine with the car except for the noise, has this ever happened to anyone?- its definitely a first for me.

When you say, 'squeak, squeak, squeak', are you talking about repeated discrete squeaks, or a long, continuous squeal?? If it's repeated squeaks, then you've got something stuck up under there that's repeatedly rubbing against the torque converter or flywheel. Is there a cover that you can take off and look up in there with a drop light or something??

Exactly! yeah its repeated discrete squeaks and I've been trying to get in there but theres only one little hole down by the flywheel where you can see in- but there doesn't seem to be anything touching it. I'm about to check again...

It sounds pretty minor, but if you can get a high pressure hose nozzle up there, you may be able to flush it out. Hmm... trying to think what could be up in there to cause that kind of a sound... it's not a 'clang' like metal, eh? Not a 'tick' like something slapping, but rather a squeak like a rubber or polymer piece. Hmm... wish I had an exploded view of that assembly.
