I've found an unbelievably awsome fix for these stupid C33 radios that get dimmed out displays and even fuzzy reception. The defect is pinpointed and it tells you how to fix it. Right behind the display board, there are two tiny surface mount resistors that develop cracks too small for the human eye to see because of heat build up around the dashboard. The fix describes how to get to these and and solder them back.
I've done it and my display is as bright as can be and the reception even got somewhat better. Here is the link... http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=251722 I actually think this should be posted as a new technical article, how could I go about making that happen?

Excuse the misspell, by the way, in the subject line, I guess I was somewhat excited about posting the fix and my finger slipped.

I saw that Arturo Gossage article in Boston Bimmer a couple of years ago, but never tried to do it. The follow up in bimmerforums actually details the work a bit better, but I gotta ask you one question. If the milk is sour today, why would you think it's gonna be fresh tomorrow? Obviously the C33s have issues abound, not limited to the display. I found out how miserable they are once I replaced mine with a C43 unit. If you think your reception got better once you fixed the display, you should hear how nice the C43 sounds. It doesn't have high limit restraint like the C33, so it make much better use of the factory amp. It deletes the weather band, & adds PTY & RDS along with a scan feature. The thing is this, fixing the display is great, but the unit is still a dog, as many will attest. Seriously, take a look at the C43 or CD43 units, you'll be very, very pleased.
