Odd Noise - fuel Pump?

I have a '93 325i with 109K. Recently I have noticed a metalic whine when the fuel level is one-quarter full or less. The car drives fine, but the noise is worrying me.

Do the fuel pumps get noisy? Or is this the sound of impending failure or a clogged fuel filter?

It shouldn't be hard to tell if it is the pump. Just pull the back seat cushion off and the pump is right there for you to listen to.

The fuel tank is a dual lobe system and it is possible that the hose system that draws gas from the secondary lobe is not connected correctly. So it could read 1/4 tank and actually be nearly empty at the pump. When/if you replace the pump check the hoses.
