Keyless Remote Not Working

I have a 1999 328I Convertible with a factory keyless remote and alarm. When attempting to lock or unlock the vehicle I hear the chirps from the alarm, but the doors do not lock or unlock. The central locking unit is functioning, as I can use the interior power lock button, or use the key in the door to secure both doors, the trunk, hood, and gas cap. All fuses under the hood are good. Any suggestions?

Smile Answer to the Problem

The fact that the alarm was chirping three times, but the doors weren't locking mean't that the car was not ready to alarm. It sensed that something was not properly closed, so it would not attempt to lock the doors or arm the alarm. The answer in my case was the micro-switch at the hood that wasn't quite contacting when the hood was shut, but it could have been the micro-switches in the door latches or the trunk. Hope this helps others.

I had the same problem with my car. It turned out it was faulty wiring in the trunk. There's a neat photo of what typically happens in Project 82 of the 101 Projects book. You can also see the bonus photos here:

It also may be the microswitches in the door mechanism. The replacement procedure is shown in Project 67 of the 101 book...
