Timing belt change
Ok guys, I have a couple quick questions for y'all:
1: What is a usuall shop labor cost for replacing the timeing belt/ tensioner and water pump? 2: How much of a pain in the @ss is the above mentioned process, and about how long does it take. I am an import machanic and have worked on countless Porsches, Lotus, Ferraris, Lambos... etc, just never had the pleasure of doing "heavy" work on a Bimmer. Tools won't be an issue I have two full boxes and a roll around... Thanks for the info, Nick

I cant directly answer your questions but...
The E30 timing belt change is outlined here http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/101-Projects-20-E30-Timing-Belt/101-Projects-20-E30-Timing-Belt.htm and in Wayne's newest book http://www.101projects.com/

I think replacement of the timing belt is actually pretty easy, if you also decide to replace the radiator hoses and water pump at the same time. Everything is very accessible.
Not sure about the shop rates... -Wayne

Oh hell, that looks pretty straight forward... I was expecting a "stand on right foot while waving left hand in air, now gently bight lip, and close one eye "either one" now remove timeing belt with specialty tool #78947573...."
Thanks for the info, looks like I know what I will be doing this weekend! Laters all, Nick

many944s,
I would expect a typical shop to charge you no less than $400 for the timing belt change. |
