water leak

Hi
This is my first time posting on here, i hope you can help.I am the current owner of a 325 i se, . Since owning the car the on board computer is always telling me that the water level is low, i keep topping up approx once a week.On Thursday my car overheated it was in the red with the warning light on , pulled over immediately slowly unscrewed the lid there was no water at all, there was a terribly loud noise coming from the cooling system only way to describe it was loud bangs. On closer inspection i have noticed the water coming from around the pulleys, without taking the front could i be right in guessing the water pump has gone. Please can somebody help me.

many thanks
cat

BMW's that overheat tend to blow the head gasket or crack the head. Check you oil for coolant.

You could be leaking coolant from the water pump seal. The water pump is relatively cheap.

I would do a compression test to see if your head is good. If it isn't you should pull the head and see how bad the damage is before going further.

Thank you for your advice, the state of the seal was the first thing i was going to check.I have noticed oil around the washer bottle that was not there before as the engine was very clean.
