cooling system issues
hi I am new to the forum
I just had my timing belt, water pump, and most other belts replaced, but when my car warms up the fan kicks in as it should but when it cools off it doesn't turn off. and when im accelerating should the fan clutch slow the fan down?? do you think that this is the fan clutch?? any suggestions?? how should I go about replacing it if i have to?? |

Sounds like the fan clutch is doing it's job the fan shouldn't completely stop.

but shouldn't it slow the fan down when I'm accelerating??
because it gets really loud. |

Are you talking about your secondary the fan, the electric one in front of the radiator?

The mechanical fan never stops turning. It has a viscous clutch to protect the fan from quick changes in velocity etc.
What year and model, I'm pretty sure the E30 is the same as the E36's I'm familiar with.

its a 1987 es 325 yea i know that it doesn't stop spinning. But the fan clutch wasn't slowing it down when i was at higher RPM's like it should be doing.

It isn't supposed to slow it down. When the fluid in the clutch heats up it becomes thicker, causing the fan to engage even more. The clutch is on the fan to decrease the flow so the car will warm up to operating temperature fast improving emmisions and drivability.

Slow down may not be the best term but what I think he means is its speed relative to the engine RPM should not be linear. In other words, at 4k the fan should be turning twice as fast as 2k.
I don't know how these clutches usually fail. I thought they failed the other way, thats is spinning more freely. Personally I would replace it with an electric fan.

When you check the fan try spinning it by hand you should feel some resitance if it spins with out any resistance the fan clutch is bad. Also check to make sure it is on tight and for up & down and side to side movement If it is tight but moves up and down or side to side your water pump is going out.
