Disabling ASC/T in 97 318ti (n44)
As it is, every time I start the car, the next thing I do is turn off the traction control. I'd like to either make "off" the default or just disable it alltogether without killing the ABS. Anyone know the best way to do this? I'm thinking of just unplugging the ASC/T throttle body but I assume the system uses the ABS as well ... can anyone confirm or deny this?

It does not effect the ABS on the M52 and S52 engines. I doubt it does on yours.
Mine is unplugged and the light finally burned out a few months ago after 1 year. Actually on the M52 and S52 you can buy a plain tube off a particular model of Z3? or Z4? that replaces the ASC butterfly tube.

Well, I believe the owners manual says that it not only cuts power but also actuates the brake on the spinning wheel. It would not be the first mis-information I've read in the owners manual (the oil capacity in there is off by over a quart!) but I actually have reason to believe that it does use the brakes. I had one wheel in super slick mud and it seemed that the asc hit the brake on the spinning wheel transfering power to the other side and helping me get un-stuck, so I'm inclined to think it's true. With your ASC throttle body unplugged, does you asc not still do anything?

If you unplug or disable the ASC then expect it not to function at all. However this will not effect the normal operation of the ABS.
Applying the brake to the spinning wheel is BMW's attempt at a faux limited slip and it is part of the ASC+T. On the E46, a single touch of the ASC button disables the ASC but not he faux limited slip. To turn off that portion you hold down the button few 3+ seconds. Your E36 may be the same.

Good to know, thanks!
Someone on 318ti.org linked me to the following: http://www.jogger-egg.com/kbob/asc+t.html I love it! That is at the top of my todo list (right after I figure out why my car runs SO lean).

Hmm a capacitor to simulate pressing the button on startup. Pretty damn cool.
