I was able to locate the source of the noise, but can't get to it. It sounds like it is coming from the grate directly below the windsheild wipers. To get to it, I believe I'd have to remove the wipers, but even that seemed to have more than meets the eye. I figured I'd just pop off the cap, remove the lug nut & they'd come off. Unfortunately they didn't budge. But the sound is definatley coming from that area. Any thoughts on what It may be?

I believe that the fan is accessed throguh the passenfger compartment.

From under the dash or throught the engine compartment? When I tried goin through the glovebox (like Javier mentioned), It was an exercise in futility. Sure there are visible screws, but when there removed, the box still doesn't move. Now there is a box attached to the firewall on the passenger side which is covered in a foam like padding, but that doesn't sound like where the noise is coming from. It is definitely coming from the grate under the wiper assembly.

Can't wait till supertrack posts his finds as my car does the same things. At first I thought that it's the blower motor that needs to be replaced but it appears that it is almost a universal problem. I thought that my car '95 318is is somewhat older but I see that people with '98 models have the same trouble.

If you guys are talking about a ticking sound that you can hear when the fan is on low, almost like a card in bicycle spokes, I have the same problem intermittently. Can't wait to read what you find on this one!

I have heard that all you need to do is spray some lube into the fan bearings and that should take careof the noise.

Jared, are you talking about the blower fan in the dash, or the radiator fan behind the grill? Also, what type of spray lubricant would you suggest? Would a WD40 work? If I indeed do need to spray it into the blower fan in the dash, how should I get to it?

OK, what fan is squeaking? Thats the fan you need to hit with the WD-40.

The fan thats squeeking is the blower on the climate control. Javier said to go throught the glove box, which I had no luck with. It sounds like its coming from the grate below the windsheild wipers, but I can't get to that easily either. How would you lube the climate control fan?

Since DJ1009 was kind enough to bring this back to the top after 10 months, it's worth revisiting. I still have that forsaken 'clicking' noise, & would love to make it stop. So again, where do we spray the WD40, to lube the fan bearings?
