Urgent help needed! please?

Hey everyone, just been to try n evacuate a mate from a flooded house but failed at the first hurdle, been through a few torrents in the road and although the car drove through them and kept going without any hiccups or missfiring, as soon as I came to a roundabout, the engine stalled as soon as the clutch went in.
I couldnt start the engine and had to be towed back home.
All fuses seem to be intact and the starter turns ok - I had to put it in 1st and use the starter to get her off the road - just not kicking in, do you think with a little drying out she might be ok or is there something a little more serious going on?

She is an e30 316i Greg 1990.

Been under the bonnet today, had the rocker cover off and cambelt cover off, when turning the engine over the cambelt and rockers/valves do not move, the cambelt is tight and doesnt seem to be broken from the top inspection cover and when in gear the car does move when turning ignition over.
baffled!

Really appreciate any help you guys can offer.
Thanks.

pull the plugs and turn it over with a ratchet. to blow the water out of the sockets, hopefully by tring to move it in first gear you did not destroy the motor

How deep was the water you drove through? Was it deep enough that it could have been ingested by the engine? Is it possible you just splashed water on something and short circuited it?

not deep enough to have 'swallowed' any water, the thing that bothers me is that when turning over the engine to start, the timing belt and rockers/valves do not move. I would have thought that they would as when it is in gear the car will move forwards in 1st gear when turning the ignition.

Sounds like the belt.

The starter turns the fly wheel so the tranny and crankshaft will spin but if the cams dont move then the belt is not moving.

the belt is intact and still tight, would there be a woodruff key at the end of the crankshaft where the timing belt joins it that may have broken, just letting the crankshaft spin and the timing belt stay still?

just inspected the belt closer at the crankshaft- the timing belt has been shredded by the sprocket on the inside, on first inspection looked normal but found nobbly pieces of rubber collected underneith the sprocket

Gates.com can tell you if it is an interference engine but I think it is.

You either change the belt and check compression or find out if it is inference and go ahead and pull the head now.
