Angry overheating

ok so i was driving my 96 328is to work one morning happened to look down and noticed the car was hot. so i pulled over shut the car off, waited 30 mins to cool it to normal temp, trying to make it to work. 2 mins later it was hot again. Had it towed, so thinking about it, in the winter the car never fully warmed up so i suspected a thermostat. I ordered a genuine bmw unit, drained the radiator, replaced the thermostat, and filled the radiator with the bleeder screw open, and started the car...i get luke warm heat and it seems if i have the cap on and bleeder screw tight, it overheats. so i tried to burp it a few times and if i leave the caps off, it will overflow coolant through where the cap should be, but once i put the cap on and tighten the screw the temperature starts to climb. at that point i can open the caps again and it almost instantly cools down and is ok. i then top off the fluid and recap it and the same thing continues to happen. Any clues or suguestions?

You may have a failed water pump. Has it been changed to a metel one or do you have the original plastic one?

it is original but i think it is working due to the fact that with no cap it will push coolant out the top of the overflow bottle

How many miles are on your car? The water pumps on the E36 are only good for about 85,000 miles, and I'd guess if you have a '96 you've gone long past that.

Your problems are unusual. It sounds like a blockage or restriction.

Was there sludge in the coolant?

I'd pull everything off, clean it and check or plastic debris or sludge.

E36 doesnt have a bleed on the housing but I think the E30 does.

This is the reason I asked in my previous post. The E36 with a six has a lot of the quirks like the POS plastic water pump. Your failure description was text book for a water pump failure.
