BMW 325is 1995 Video of my engine knocking with a funny smell. Gonna have it looked at Monday but wanted a second opinion so I know how much of a financial situation I'll be in. I appreciate it! best, george Last edited by HEY MANG; 01-04-2008 at 01:01 PM.. |

Turns out to be spark plug issue where the problem just got worse over time. Due to the fact the spark plug was tightened a bit too much thereby being stripped. Since this happened it caused oil to squirt out & since the mechanic fixed it, its still gonna be problematic until I take that gasket head out & replaced.Otherwise I would need to get a drill bid tool that will seal the worn out part where the spark plug went. Gots to call the shop back with a decision on this.

I guess I missed your original post. You can certainly hear the loose plug.
I had a loose plug, not stripped though. I could hear the deep exhaust put-put-put that is in your video. But yours also has a whoosh for the intake stroke since the leak was obviously much bigger than mine.

Anyone know where I can get long enough drill bid to thread the part where the spark plug goes into?
Thanks |

I don't see how you can re-thread the spark plug hole in the head with the head in the car. Call a head shop (automotive machine shop) and ask then what your options are.

By re-tapping the spark plug holes while the head is on the engine, you are at a serious risk of dropping metal shavings into the head.

You didnt say they, you asked where you could get a drill bit that would reach the threads.
Either way good luck.

It's not a drill bit you (or your mechanic) needs, it's a tap. But as others have stated, it's definitely NOT a job you do with the head still on the block. Neither is installing a Heli-coil or other thread repair insert, which is what needs to be done by the way you describe the loose plug. Simply retapping the hole will not repair it. What it almost certainly WILL do is introduce a bunch of metal chips and dirt from the existing threads to the inside of your engine, and that will shortly introduce you to a very large and ugly repair bill. I would be extremely leery of any mechanic that wanted to attempt a repair with the head still in place on the engine.

Did you buy a time machine, too? You posted 9 days ago that you were looking for a drill bit or tap to help with the repair. Now you say you got the car back 14 days ago, fixed? Something doesn't add up
![]() Did they take the head off to do the repair? (I hope) |
