Anyone have advice for replacing guibo??
Whilst under the E30 today I found that my guibo is SHOT!
Basically it looks like a handful of rubber bands holding everything together, with a few pieces of thread hanging out here and there ![]() According to Haynes, it looks like I have to remove the entire exhaust, and drive shaft!!! Is there anyway to remove the heat-shield, unbolt the center bearing and "slip" the driveshaft towards the rear to remove the guibo? Any advise is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Nick

I'm pretty sure the exhaust needs to come off to get at the guibo, if not it will sure make it easier. There is a splined slip joint somewhere on the drive shaft that I believe will let you slide the shaft back enough to make room to replace the guibo. There are 6 bolts that hold it in place, 3 bolt to the output shaft on the tranny and the other 3 bolt to the drive shaft. I believe you have to unbolt the 3 for the tranny side and then you should be able to pull the shaft back far enough to let it drop down to where you can access the nuts and bolts to remove it from the drive shaft. Do not let the drive shaft hang down on its own, this can damage the u-joint. Always suspend it from a piece of wire or something, and if you have to separate the 2 halves of the shaft make sure you mark the splines so that you can get it back together the same way it came apart, otherwise it will be out of balance. Hopefully someone else will chime in if I left something out or gave you false info.
Good luck!

I've heard of people doing it without removing the drive shaft. I removed mine but it was a clutch install job.
It was 16mm (maybe 18mm something odd/strange, err even rather) on the E36 and I had to use PBBlaster and a impact wrench to get the guibo bolts loose.

Thanks for the info guys, I am going to jump on the project tomorrow.
Thankfully, I was already planning on it being out of commission this week as I am going to be replacing the water-pump, TB, tensioner, hoses, etc. What's one more thing to add to the list ![]() -Nick

Once its unbolted you might try unbolting the tranny mount bracket and jacking the front of the engine to help get the Guibo out.

Actually, with the tranny attached to the engine you will need to support the tranny when unbolting the mounting bracket and slowly let it down a bit.

I had a mechanic friend replace mine. He unbolted the driveshaft and moved it sideways on top of the exhaust system to replace the disc. Took about 45 minutes and he didn't need to remove the exhaust. I hope you get this in time before you do too much work.

Sweet! I just today finished installing my water pump, thermo, timing belt, tensioner, cam seals, crank seal, yadda, yadda...
I am going to tackle the guibo tomorrow, so hopefully I can replace it that way! I'll take 45 min over the HOURS, I was looking at removing the exhaust and all! Thanks! Nick
