"Whiring" from the rear
I have a '91 318is and I am getting a strange noise from what sounds like the rear end. At a steady speed I get a Whiring noise coming from the diff or maybe the right rear wheel. I definitly hear it over my right shoulder. When I accelerate the noise goes away until I reach a steady speed. Noise does not go away when I apply brakes. Is it my diff or maybe my right rear wheel bearing???

I would start by swapping tires to eliminate that as a cause.
A bearing usually will make more noise when turning but the effect is harder to achieve in the rear. I don't hear many complaints about diff noises. I stops when accelerating but not braking. How does it sound during downshift/engine braking?
