heating issues -'92 318

a couple weeks ago the fan clutch on a '92 318 broke off and the fan along with the remaining parts were found resting in the fan shroud. I've had it replaced, but now the car runs hotter than before. When driving in the freeway the temp is about 1/4 and when idle, the temp jumps to 1/2 in less than 30 sec.

Now what are the chances that the mechanic that replaced the clutch and reinstalled the fan might have done that the wrong way? is the fan supposed to suck air through the radiator or push it through when idle?

Also, I tried bleeding the system and it didn't seem to have any air in it.

I'd appreciate any ideas.....

It sucks air in the same direction air flows across the rad when in motion.

Does temp drop again when you rev the engine?

Double check the fan clutch is good by using a small amount of rolled up newspaper, the fan should bat the paper away easily.

What temp did it run before the problem?

1/2 is not bad but moving from 1/4 to 1/2 in 30 sec is not good.

It is not possible to move air the opposite direction with the same fan blade unless you reverse the rotation.(ie.the engine was going backward). If you turn a fan over, the pitch of the blades remains the same, so if it is going thre same rotation, it still blows the same direction as before.

Just tried the newspaper test after a short drive - I could stop the fan with little effort while idling. Revving the engine for a while does nothing.
The temp used to be around the 1/4th mark before the fan clutch broke. The other thing is my mechanic hasn't been helpful at all, so I will be looking elsewhere for service. Could this turn ugly when things heat up in the summer?

Sounds like the fan clutch is bad unless the belt is terribly loose. A loose belt would usually make noise. Does the center of the fan stop when the blades stop?

Start with fixing the cause of the fan blades stopping when you do the newspaper test.
